WIth this piece I was focused mostly on branding and repetition and what it means to monopolize on one's image over and over again. It came out looking very interesting specially because everytime a certain character is drawn subtleties start to suggest movement within the piece. This movement is also cascaded by the diagonal nature of the piece.

Woo hoo!!!! I'm starting to post the nice-well-defined pictures of my childhood series one by one in my blog. This piece is entitled "Me" and it's 28.5"x 11.5". Obviously this is a type of self portrait and it's painted on furniture because I wanted to keep it cozy and familiar.

I haven't been able to enter any adventurous and artistic mazes lately but I did however work on these pieces above. Only the santa claus had guy is finished. The other I'm still working on and I intend to dig deeper on my next pieces. Visually I'm experimenting with interpretation and play of shapes. It's so weird how little or how much space has to do with the overall meaning of a face.

Below is my newest piece from Childhood (the series). In this I painted the fountain character with a very heavy painterly feel and focused on vibrant rich colors that I premixed and layered on top of the surface. The surface consists of two shelves; one gray and one white, and it give a a nice minimalist background. This piece is coming along well I might sandpaper some parts of it down where the matte medium clumped but other than that it'll be this weird monochromatic piece. If you look closely there's some ebony pencil which give movement to the painterly strokes.

And below here I have the piece I was working on since last posting. It is pretty much done except I want to experiment a little bit with glazing and making colors a little more vibrant. It'll change just a tad bit and it'll be a little more colorful but the gist of it will remain the same. Just like the one above and the live painting I used ebony pencil on this one too. I fell in love with the carbon charcoal look again :)

The Live Painting at the Matrix on the fifth, hosted by Ian Ross, was a success! It was my first time painting in front of people and for some reason I felt very energized and just kept the brush moving. I a bit of the performance aspect boosts creativity in a very weird way. I was also a little drunk so that might have helped.

This painting is finished, I think. I"m thinking of adding colored lights to the background but I'm not sure if I will. It's probably a good idea so this painting is not finished I lied, but very close to though.

I'm working on some new stuff on fiber glass at home. It's coming a long nice and I think this will be one of those paintings where I don't have an appearance. I noticed my characters take different meanings whenever I move forward with this series. It's like they have a lifer of their own almost.

Oh oh there was a silent auction which I was a part of in Autobody Fine Art. I'm not sure how it went but hopefully it went well :)

Live Show and Art Show!

I've gotten these ambush invitations for shows which I gladly accepted. The first one is this one at Spritzers. The show is basically a free art show with tons of different art being given away. I decided to join because giving away art is a funny concept and it is always fun to see happiness in someone's face from one of my works. The information is in the pic below. I'll be there ;)

And the pic above is my free art for this show. So the other show is not really a show but it's happening next wednesday. It's a live paint show! I'll be at the MATRIX lounge in SF (google it) painting live from my childhood sketches. Works will be sold on site and works that do not get sold MIGHT get seen in my future childhood shows. It's the first time I live paint in front of people but I'm not at all scared. I like moving the brush and creating new things instinctively. So if u wanna see me in the zone u should definately show up for this event. Don't forget! Matrix. SF. LOUNGE. NIGHT TIME!!! More details to come!

These last pics are the two pieces I'm working on. One is an installation. They are not complete and might I add the butterfly piece has changed DRASTICALLY. Either way enjoy :)

Making its Way to a Finish and Show down in Oakland.

I know I haven't posted 2 weeks after the last post, in fact it has almost been a month. I was a little busy since it was birthday and all and I just got a brand new camera in which I'll use from now on for the photos on this blog. No more Iphone shots yay! (Exceptions apply) Anyways this is my latest work and I'm almost done. I need to hang it with its instalation component to see if everything balances. It seems that that's all I look for when making artwork, balance. But my balance is so off balance that you need to hang out around these a little bit to feel the different gravity.

I also started working on a sculpture. I have never done a sculpture that I liked so I decided to take it upon myself to make a 3D object that resonates well with my paintings. I'm looking to infuse mostly colors and abstractions and also using a lot of materials recognizable to most people. Again with the whole "warm" feel I want my paintings to have by using furniture. I decided also to use makeup for these sculptures since the art store sucks at making anything new and relevant. Boo for shimmer acrylic paints. Boooooooo!!!!

I'm also working on my own website!! That's right I'll have my own website with all my work in it nicely organized and all. THe one designing the website is my sister Anna Salazar. She's starting out a career in design very soon and I can't thank her enough for doing my website. Here's a sneak peek of my latest painting for the childhood series. I'm thinking of having people be part of this one so it will be interactive. You'll see how when it's finished! For now enjoy these nice glazed colors in one of Forakis's unfinished pieces that were about to b thrown away. So I suppose it's a collaboration of sorts. I love 50's 60's geometry art. This is the second piece inspired by geometric art.

Here's the finished product. I always stare at the painting for hours until I conclude it finished. I don't really tin about color or value I just think about the implications it could bring. I decided this piece was finished because I liked the separation between painting and the wood material and how some characters submerge into the paint completely almost like a sea of dreams but one is half in and half out. The lonely figure is lonely and blocked off to the side. If you see the painted areas as individual pieces they work as stand alone compositions :) I hope you guys liked it because I certainly did :)))))

This is my latest work and I'm painting the figures on the right and cut out. THere's gonna be a little more painting that will add to the composition but the whole thing is very disconnected. I'm exploring with the feeling of uncertainty and self-awareness in this painting by not being present. The first pic shows new tables I bought to work on. Now I have a huge working station and it's great!!!!

And this is my storage space right next to the tables. It's okay for now and it's nice to have easy access to current work.

These are works from the past which didn't really quite fit into any series I had going on. I think these have helped me explore different areas of artmaking which opened new possibilities for interpretation. I'll be posting more in the future for kicks ha!

Preparing a new surface and Free Art at the Murmur

It's been a long month trying to get a job and keep myself afloat from all the bills that come after college but I'm making ends meet and still got tons of time for my work. Recently I have been sketching ideas for the childhood series and came out with a lot of good ideas but I also realized that most of the art magic happens spontaneously. Below is an angled me I'm sympathizing with.

Also this month I participated in yet another Free Art event at the murmur in Oakland. I only made two pieces this time of quick sketches of me. I think it's a good sketch and has a lot of character. Those who got this are lucky bastards. Why is everything I'm writing underlined?

Below is the current painting I'm working on. I'm trying to prep the surface with this foggy wet effect but it's taking a long time. I think I'll have to buy gloss medium to make it more dimensional. I already envisioned where the bodies will be and how much I'll show and I think it will be a pretty powerful piece. I took a close up shot of a part where I expose the layers which I find beautiful.

These days I've been thinking about my art practice and I think I need to be bigger. So I decided that I'll create some performance art and happenings which I'll be documenting and posting in the future. I'm thinking of creating clothes and making videos but I'm not sure exactly what kind of subject matter this will all entail. My decision to merge into other fields comes from wanting to live the life my paintings do.

I love the fact that my art has the power to bring people back and makes me feel like we are all part of something. New Childhood painting and Nupens Work + EXHIBITS IN 2009!!!

That's right I finished this new painting. It was a little harder than I thought but I still finished it fairly quickly. Was having problems getting the right kind of tone for his skin. It would either look too wet or too dry. I think I got it. I chose to left everything else empty to emphasize the natural aesthetics of the back of the whiteboard I'm using. There's two different tones like an amazing minimalist painting. Who knew minimalism can also be found in everyday objects :o

And this here is my Nupens work. I spent a lot of time melting the sharpies with water and layering this thing over and over again. It has acquired a nice painterly quality but it is still grounded in drawing since I chose to leave the finer lines. It came out better than I expected and the white space dictates endless worlds around this event that's happening on paper. It's just so right to leave that amount of space. I forget that it's paper. Also don't forget that I don't care what you think of the white space, your thoughts don't count.

Ha ha ha ha HALLOWEEN BEOTCHES! I helped Devin craft his Lady Gaga costume for halloween. I used foam to create the diamond shapes then I wrapped it in black masking tape and attached it to his jacket. He's wearing it backwards so it looks like a dress. It came out pretty amazing and with cheap materials :)

Free Art? Childhood?

To Open the month I participated in this Free Art event in Oakland Art Murmur. That's right I handed out free art. Okay it wasn't like anything super expensive but I printed out and editioned two of my paintings. It's copyrighted material so there's a little thrill to it ;) Below are some photos of the process and finished product of the free art. Free Art is good because it gets people to collect and value the power of collection of singular objects. It's kind of a romantic idea but I'm from Brazil and I'm the last romantic. Enjoy the pics I might do it again. Maybe I should print out big prints and sell them online what do you guys think? They'd be very cool and detail and big. Maybe bigger than the real thing lol.

I have been working on the childhood series lately but very slowly. That's because I can't find a job anywhere and it has been a little frustrating. Below are some pics of a sketch and a painting in its premature levels. I hope you like where this is going. I'm putting a lot emotion into this :)

Creative head.

I just finished the painting above and I actually started on another new painting from this series. It's coming together nicely and I can't wait to buy more wood and paint scenes with narrative. I want it all to feel elusive, dark, and hopeful. Maybe that's how I felt when I was growing up? Who knows! i'm still working on the pens and Sharpies too and I'll post some of those on the next post. I'm doing this thing where I draw with the marker and quickly drag gesso on top creating this painter smudge like feel on the drawing. It's interesting because it's done in markers and pens and not paint but it looks like paint.

In other news I started an internship at a gallery and it's a lot of fun. I like staying in the same place as other people's art and now it's clear why people purchase these. The longer you live with them the more you start to understand and appreciate the medium and intent of the artist. They make you think and analyze so much it's so interesting. I would type in here what gallery I'm in but I'll just say it's in SF. So if you see me you get a special reward for finding me.

So a couple of days ago was the opening of my show Verses Revisited at the Dirty Bird Lounge in Hayward. It was awesome one of my friends bought me 2 scooby snacks and we played some pool. Amazingly enough I didn't do as bad as thought I would. It's because I have math skills. Thanks for all who came and of course lots of pics from the opening in this post. I am working on a bunch of new work and have a studio visit scheduled. I'll post more on those two things on the next post. But for now enjoy the pics ;)

Newly Reincarnated Bar Brings Art Culture to Hayward

October 1^st, 2009

Hoping to bring a new beat to the Hayward community the Dirty Bird Lounge brings local and emerging artists to expose their work. The lounge is located at 29308 Mission Blvd Hayward, CA and the show runs from the 8^th of October through the 31^st of October. An opening reception will be held on the 8^th of October from 6pm to 9pm in which the artist will be present. Works included are from Victor Salazar's, a CSU East Bay Alumni, Verses series.

The new bar/ lounge, formerly known as the Viper Lounge newly known as the Dirty Bird Lounge, has been serving cocktails for over 60 years and is proud to bring for the first time ever art exhibitions into the bar. “I want to bring more art into the community and maybe help Hayward become an art scene” says Aric Yeverino, owner of the lounge. “I live in Oakland and I've been surrounded by art constantly and I think there's a lot of artists that come from Hayward we need to see.” The bar also offers two freshly felted pool tables and an eclectic jukebox.

The current exhibiting artist, Victor Salazar, is showing his Verses series. The series is a set of paintings created to illustrate emotional instability through form. “The lounge is bringing something new to Hayward and it's nice to see an outlet for art other than just the Sun Gallery or the Arts Council Gallery” says Salazar. “It's also a great opportunity for artists in Hayward to get exposure in a place where everyday people go to.” Salazar has shown work in many places including Oakland and was part of the Oakland Art Murmur in October 2008.

I'm becoming my own hero. And that's healthy!

Hello my boys and girls and frequent trolls who surf the web looking for inappropriate content. This month has been a little crazy I've been trying to look for a job and couldn't find any. It makes it a lot harder when someone tells you they are gonna hire then 2 weeks of non answered phone calls you finally go to the place he's not hiring you. But that's not what this blog is about! It's about my work and my ways of getting the work done!

I guess my bedroom is slowly becoming a studio. Everything is running up the walls to make space for gesso piles on top of furniture and lots of loosely rolled work I need to store. I actually just store them in front of me in open air.

I worked more on the personal sort of like Wizard of Oz ish paintings and this is one of them below. It's charcoal on duralar and it's one of the antagonists of the narrative. When I actually start making the big work it's going to look more visually interesting than narratively interesting. I'm more into aesthetics instead of morals you know? I don't want to tell you what to think. If you wanna know what's right or wrong you should ask your mom and if you don't have a mom ask your facebook friends.

The painting below is still in progress and it's also part of the "narrative" paintings. I have a great feeling about these. They remind me a lot of childhood and the feeling of magic. If you follow my work closely you will probably notice a lot of references to old works of mine.

I can't stand working on one type of work only and I already said I started new pens and sharpies and there's one of them below. It's actually more sculptural since it protrudes from the wood. I'm getting into new places with these and they are becoming a challenge to continue. Not a challenge like "oh no these are so hard and I'm so bored producing these" but it's becoming harder and harder to continue this long run and keep it interesting. Interesting to me. But when it does become interesting it feels very rewarding. I guess that's why I'm in it for :)

I almost forgot to mention. I'm having an opening reception at the Dirty Bird Lounge in Hayward. They liked my work (Verses) so I bust it out. More details to come. Come see me!

Many Directions

In this post I've decided to show all different works I have going on right now at my "studio". I like all of them but time will come in which I'll have to decide which one I have to choose to work on first. I decided to let you guys influence my decision :O

I started a new set of pens and sharpies. They are different because the process that i used to make has changed a bit so I call them the NuPensAndSharpies. The main difference is that i use watered down white gesso and things are monochromatic. So in a way I'm making the work look more complex by using more shades.

The paintings on the left( or wherever they are I can't see where they'll end up blogger is stupid) are two different set of works. The first one is part of my club series in which I paint club like experiences but viewed in a lighter perspective. The paintings on the right are my newest paintings in which I use personal experiences and alter egos to create a a world lightly based on my personal life. Both works are very different in feelings.

So which body of work are you interested in seeing grow first? :)

I must also mention that I have a duralar series as well but I need to take new photos of those and post them.

The Opening (Zeitgeist)

The opening was a lot of fun and it was cool to see the new series on a gallery's wall. The big drawings when hung look a little wrinkly but it kind of goes with the sketchbook spontaneous feeling I was going for. If you were to buy you could always frame it though :P We were required to make free art to give away and put outside the gallery. I made a stencil of me and a pokemon and put it outside. Thank goodness it got taken! You know how weird it would feel to have artwork rejected even if it's free?! Anyway here are some pics of the show!

I was "volunteering" today at a booth at summerfest and Kaila, the booth's owner's daughter found out that I draw and asked me to draw random things for her. I actually drew because it'd be a fun experiment to see what kind of things she'd want. Below is a pic she requested.

I also wanted to thank everyone that came out to see the show. I'm glad there's people tat support art and events that celebrate expression and creativity :)

AUTOBODY FINE ART

I don't think I've announced this yet but I'll be showing some of my pens and sharpies in this upcoming group show at AUTOBODY Fine Art in Alameda. It's a great chance for those who've only seen them online to go see them live! I'll be there too so you can witness my artist aura. Tony Hoang and Apryl Pascua will also be showing work and they are my buddies. But yeah, come out on Friday night this week from 6pm to 10pm and enjoy the show! In other news, I started another self portrait but this time it's a painting in acrylics. I'm trying to go from brushstrokes to definition in parts of the painting I'll post it later so you can see. I started painting again because most of my work so far has been drawings and I love drawing but painting is something I like to do as well. And if I don't exercise it often I'll lose my edge. So I'm probably going to paint things that don't mean much to me for a while. If you want them you can have them but you have to find me first ;)

Out to Kill

Amazingly enough I have managed to continue making art during this dreadful heat. I started on and finished 1 of 2 duralar pieces and for some reason started another pens and sharpies. There was something I wanted to explore with the red sharpie mark because it wasn't completely dark enough to cover dark lines. One of the duralar is a self portrait. For this piece I decide to draw myself with no reference photos because that's how I would draw people when I first started drawing when I was a kid. There are many egotistical words written all over the piece and I decided to write those down because normal self-portraits of artists are always weird or modest but seldom egotistical and revolting. So I gracefully rose up to the challenge.

I've been working on these drawings out of the blue just to get my hand moving. I like moving my hand quickly through the paper and I think there's a nice quality to fast lines that seem to lose control. I also like the play between conformity and spontaneity in the drawings I made. The duralar piece I'm showing here is semi-old but I visited it again with some more color and changed the composition a bit. I'll add a nice sentence on the bottom but I'm still thinking of what it should say. The color palette, when I was done with it, kind of reminded of a pallete my professor, Grace Munakata, wouuld use in some of her paintings. I was very color minded in the duralar even though I'm color blind. People ask me "how do you know what color to use" I really don't but I'm not complete color blind so I know what some color schemes feel like so it's not like a colorful painting is an impossible task for me.

I'm still looking for employment and once I get it I'll try to get a studio asap. I wanna work on stuff and hang it on the wall and just create till something hits me really hard.

Moving Along II

It feels weird now that I'm out of school. I gotta find a job now and get enough money for a studio to start working like crazy. Don't get me wrong I am working at the moment but I wanna work like crazy. Once I get a studio flattening and storing should be easier and I won't have to share my workspace with my sleeping space (distracting!) I've been messing around with the duralar paper again and I started a drawing inspired by the man in the mirror. Michael Jackson really inspired me to do my best because it's evident he did his best in his lifetime. The energy he brought into all performances was immense. He was always there when I was growing up on the radio and what not and now that he's gone it feels really weird. He was a true legend although many magazines are quick to tag many people as legendary he was an actual legend (sorry Justin Timberlake u are not the new King of Pop).

Graduation + Probably Last Drawing of the Series.

Hey everybody. It so happens I'm graduating this month and getting my degree woo hoo! College has been a crazy experience. I'm gonna miss everything and it's going to be weird not waking up and going to school or learning. Now it's gonna be like wake up and go to "work" then do art. What I'll miss the most is the critiques but I'm trying to create a group based in Alameda to discuss art. It'll be called "Hot Tamales You Can't Afford" and we'll have meetings with lots of booze and chips. I wanna find people who sort of resonate with my style and who'd be willing to post something about their art monthly on another blog. The main idea is to discuss the process of art making and gaining experience as a group and maybe have group shows. If that sounds like it's something you'd like to do email me some JPGS of your work and your name and I'll decide if you'd fit the group. Yes there are a couple of people already in it.

The drawings above are from my last drawing of the pens and sharpies series. I've been repeating shapes a lot recently and it kinda has to do with the fact that repeating shapes- not necessarily exactly the same way- gives this idea of movement and basically brings the shape to life. The gesso helps give the 2d shape a 3d space so it feels like it's moving away further into the paper. You can't really see well from these pics it's more like a personal experience type of deal. New Art and Inspiration

I have been thinking lately about the meaning of art and what it means to be an artist and I hate the fact that most artists seem to be ok with being people that make drawings for other people to enjoy. Just last week I was finishing a class and was kinda discouraged of making art because one of my teachers would say things like "you can't sell this" or "people won't like to buy things from you" and it's kinda like where is the sense of being somebody gone to. Can't we make art that's for ourselves and have people appreciate the fact that people like us exist? I'm a bit scared everything will just pass me and I'll be left wondering why I wanted to become an artist the first place. I'm working with these new exciting materials and couldn't take the idea that people think I make art to please others so I wrote "I like paintings that make me think" on it to kind of signify this sarcastic view I have when making art. Below you'll find also some of my pens and sharpies drawings hung the way i want them hung. I hung them in my room :P so I can live with them a little bit.

2nd Big Drawing done, Working on a New One, and Trying to Get a Show.

Here it is the second drawing! all finished and good to go. I created this little atmosphere around the subject so there's like a 3D kind of effect to it. I wanted it to feel like a lava lamp or at least have some rhythm to it which it does and I'm. Enjoy the pics!

I am currently seeking galleries/ cafes to showcase my work. I think my body of work is strong and will please everybody in many unexpected levels (yes!) I showed some of my drawings in the B.F.A show at school and there were a couple of paintings that I liked that stood out. One is Pam's abstractions which she paints with latex. The concept is very cool. I love the textures latex can form into and the use of weird colors makes these paintings seem like they came from another world. It's very innovative. I also liked Tony's work because it kinda resonates with some of my earlier work and style (which is still inside of me believe or not) I like it that he's not scared to used urban art even after all the crap I went through when I tried it. Here's some pics of the show! I also included my trio with a close up!

Also this week I started on my third biggest drawing for the series. I decided to follow some advice from Dickson Schneider and others and started on a small drawing made on a big piece of paper. The idea is to over emphasize its delicate aspect and also add a sense of fragility with all the white space. The same drawing on a normal sized piece of paper would not have the same effect. For this drawing I'm going for animation of a single subject. Here are some pics enjoy!

Newest Drawing, Portrait for My Sister, and a Little More About My New Series!

Here's my newest drawing for my pens and sharpies series. This one is turning out really well and I like the transparency effect the object is giving. I tried taking close-up pictures so you can experience these to its fullest. If you were in a gallery and these were hanging they would easily inspire the urge to get closer and check out the details.

Here's a copy of the statement for my new series:

"Everything I do is based off spontaneity. When growing up in Sao Paulo, Brazil and California I was drawn to the random vandalistic acts on street, both graffiti and actual violence. My work feeds off this type of spontaneous energy by exhibiting street art-like tendencies through a non-conventional use of materials; using paint substituting for spray cans or reintroducing pens and sharpies as fine art materials.

For this new series I have decided to use pens and sharpies as the main medium. There's a lot of versatility in seemingly common everyday objects and I showcase their potential for art. My work has become very obsessive and has passed the norm; the pens are no longer a sketch material because of the work's size and complexity.

When people view my work I hope they realize that art is not limited in any way. Art materials are not only found at Michael's or Blick's. I hope to elude to the fact that art does not have last forever, but can be ever changing and unique in its moment in time like living organisms. "

I was also painting this portrait of my sister because I forgot to give her a birthday present. It came out really cool looking actually and I was happy that I was able to layer so many colors on top of the skin even though I'm using acrylic paint. I love working on skin for hours. There is something magical about creating skin that breathes. Who knows I might explore painting again on my next collection of art.

Myartplot.com and finished the tallest drawing in the series.

There's new website that's starting some shit around the art world. It's called Myartplot and its intent is to bring art from all artists in the world in a non-elitist kind of way. So I opened an account to check what this was all about and was quite pleased actually. The website works very much like things the internet has brought to us already like flickr and myspace.

What separates this from other art profile websites like myartspace.com and deviantart.com is the simpple design and accessibility. The layout is very light and not overworked and pretty much to the point and portfolios open up in flash which makes the single webpage presence of your profile more comfortable. Uploading and updating information in the art works similarly to flickr so there's no surfing from page to page which can be very annoying when you have a lot to update. I also like many of the other features.

The feature I like the most is the sales where you can set your price and safely sell your stuff and I already mentioned I like the portfolio layout. The only thing I wish you could do is zoom in in the artwork because some of my stuff is best presented on details and I think zooming capabilities would enhance the art experience. I would also like to see if some type of way of embedding MAP's portfolio to blogs or personal pages.

MAP also offers a network system like myspace or facebook which is very helpful for artists who think alike. Creating communities is a very powerful tool in the art world and networking seems to be one of MAPs fortes. It would be nice to see this grow into different groups within the website or have online shows featuring interesting groups in MAP.

If you are tired of rejection letters or just want to get your art out there right away or maybe you just want to meet other artists MAP is the way to go.

In other news I have finished my ambitious pens and sharpies 6ft tall drawing. I'm having trouble naming these so I guess I'll call em numbers. This is number 9. I'm working on another semi-big one and I guess I can onlly do 1-2 more of this series until I officially close it. Time to get those packets going. Moving Along

I've been working on the huge drawing (right side) alittle bit more and as you can see it's vertical now. I just need to add a few touches and I think I'll be comfortable saying that it's done. Now I just gotta start on the second huge one! The painting on the left is something I'm toying with for new ideas. I decided to use club/ bar experiences as a base for amazingly cool psychedelic paintings. The idea is to kinda live in that moment but have not seem as literal as it's seen. I going to send out packets for galleries hopefully soon and hopefully I'll hear from them so a new show might be around the corner. I can't wait till it happens all again and hopefully I'll see people I've seen in previous shows cuz that's the funnest part of attending opening night! Picking out an outfit is also fun :))))

It's time

It's a new year and it's no time for jokes! I'm preparing for this next season and gearing up for my future shows. It will be SPECTACULAR, GROUNDBREAKING, AND INAPPROPRIATE! It all starts with clearing up the clutter in my room and setting up good habits and a good office to work from :)

I'm almost finished with my upcoming exciting off the hook new series! I have one of the big ones almost finished which you can see below. There'll be 3 big drawings in my series and once I complete the remaining two I'll feel comfortable enough to show! I already have some spaces I'm thinking about sending packets to hopefully they'll like my work. Throughout this whole process making these drawings I constantly thought about my art process and the possible things poeple might get from it. The drawings challenge our thought about art materials and I try to bring in BIC pens in the mix. The sharpies I use are not temporary so I'll have to preserve them with spray but by looking at it it seems like I challenge the archival aspect of art too. The style is still street art inspired and you know I'll keep it fresh cuz I'm not old! Jk

The Verses Show and Updates!

Hello Everybody,

I've been working hard on the new series and right now I got the 6 foot piece of paper mounted on my wall. It's hard work! The thing is so big it's hard to let my mind run free but it'll pay off in the end. I decided not to post any pictures yet because I want to impress. As I was drawing it it started looking like someone's huge sketchbook. It looks really cool with the massive pen lines. It somehow question what medium art needs to be made in anyways. I think its got a lot of charisma and thought provoking potential that I hope people experience.

I also decided to include in this post a slideshow of Verses so you don't have to click your way back to the first posts on this blog. Enjoy!

Here's another drawing I made for my pen and sharpies series. In this particular drawing I focus on rectagular shapes and emphasize gesture with gesso and quickness of the applied color. The gesso becomes part of the composition too and I think it has a nice subtle feeling to it. Hopefully you can enjoy this one like I enjoyed making it :) I'm about to unertake my most ambitious project yet. The 6 foot drwaing done all in pens. I;m thinkng about a circular explosion for the first big drawing :D

Pets

Last week was one of the toughest weeks in my life. I had to say good-bye to my dog Bubbles who was put to sleep on thursday because of ferocious cancer that she developed in her hips. I only had Bubbles for 3 years but it sure feels like more than that. Everyday I grew accustomed to her greetings when I arrived home from work or seeing her behind the door crack of the backyard. She was always there and spending time with her always reduced any bad things that were happening during those times. Some people don't understand why I miss her so much since she was only a pet. But I think it's because she grew to be part of the family and I'm glad she did. Anyways I just had share this with everyone specially people that own pets. There's nothing wrong with allowing your pets to become a part of your life :)

On other news I've been drawing up the rest of the new series and decided to buy a big piece of flat smooth wood for the 6 ft drawing I'm about to start. It's gonna take a lot of time and confidence just to get through working a 6 foot tall piece of white drawing paper. The end result I hope is delicate and unique! URBAN ROCKSTAR at Mama Buzz Cafe

Last Friday was the opening ceremony for my and Lovekin's show URBAN ROCKSTAR at Mama Buzz Cafe. It was a crazy week all in all. I had to go back to the cafe fix the lights at one point and throughout the week I was trying to print out my business cards. I actually had them printed out at Kinko's which was a dreadful experience. They had to reprint my cards 3 times because there were serious quality issues in the printing. The cards came out good but I think I'll have them printed somewhere else if I need more. If anyone is wondering where I would recommend Modern Postcard or even Psprint. The show ran smoothly and there was cheap beer only $2. I drank one bottle. Many people I knew showed up which made me very content and it was nice seeing all the Oakland crowd. I even got interviewed by a reporter from the Piedmont Post :) and I loved my outfit choice. Here are some photos of the show for those of who wish were there. Hope to see you next time!

URBAN ROCKSTAR: The Set Up

This Sunday was the day me and Lovekin set up for our show, URBAN ROCKSTAR, that'll be part of first friday this upcoming friday. We both decided to take 2 walls each and I thought of decorating the space but since Lovekin has tons of art the place didn't need any extra things :) The whole set up came out looking very nice but some of the lights were not working so half of the paintings are not lit up. We should have that problem covered by friday. While transporting the artwork from my car to the gallery I passed by this KOREAN PLAZA place on Telegraph Ave. I love asian chips so I went inside and bought some. I bought one that had portuguese writing on it along with the asian characters. I also bought these really oily steamed buns that gave me a headache later that day. Anyways here are some pictures from the set up. Enjoy!

I didn't update my blog in two weeks because I was so busy dealing with the show and all. I'll resume my weekly posting schedule after the opening woo hoo!

Looking for an Opening Outfit

My show is coming up and it just hit me that I don't have anything cool to wear. I usually don't care about clothing but because it's the opening and there'll be people that potentially want to meet with me I have got to present myself properly. I was thinking of different outfits but I can't think of any outfits that would go well with this event. I know people in Oakland usually dress very grunge and punk like and my art has a little bit of that taste. But how can I translate it to an outfit? I went to San Jose to find answers and came up with a couple of solutions. I think I might do the vest thing you know? Like a dress shirt and a vest with some jeans cool belt and shoes. This style is getting overdone though so I have to find a really weird vest that would break the cycle. Another idea I had was to find patterned everything. Blazer, dress shirt, pants, with solid black socks and patterned shoes and black gloves. When I talk about patterned I mean super patterned almost to the point of being tacky but still having it balance somehow. The idea is to have me look like a big piece of fabric walking around. the last thing I thought of was to wear something weirdly simple and modern as a way of asserting myself in the art world but having this hidden idea that I already passed modernity with my hair style. It's confusing but trust me it would work. I found nothing of the sort at the mall and everything was super expensive. We'll see what actually happens to my outfit at the day of the opening now won't we? ;)

Another problem the show has sprung up for me is redesigning the space. I really like the black floor but I think it is my duty as an artist and philanthropist to spread my essence on the window and the back- ugly- wall. We also need to find a DJ if anyone wants a gig this is the perfect time to send in a sample to me via email ;)

URBAN ROCKSTAR- The Buzz has Started!

Yes it's coming very soon. I have already started some buzz for my show at the Mama Buzz Cafe in Oakland and right next to this text is what the postcards will look like. The other artist, as you may or may not know, is James Lovekin and he's a pretty cool guy. His art is both stylistically and conceptually connected to mine. WE are both inspired by subcultures and use imagery from street art. I don't think we replicate it, we are just inspired by it. His work also shares that rebellious feeling and spontaneity I always talk about. I think it will be a very sweet show and Irene Ross, the curator, was wise to pair us together. Just by seeing both sample pieces you can see how well they hang together! I'm not sure if we are going to hang our paintings side by side. Could work out great but it's still a hovering thought. What do you guys think? :)

I'm including a new painting for this new show which I think will add something new to the already existing series "Verses." I painted this after an exhausting day of driving and working and going to school and having to go to work in the morning again with only 2 hours and 15 minutes of sleep. I somehow felt like I was losing control and that something bigger was taking over and I thought about how unfortunate it would be if someone was in the same position but got caught in this spiral. I asked to not be scheduled in the morning anymore and tried to get at least 6 hours of sleep daily.

Dead squirrels and Attitude

So I was walking my dog Bubbles the other day and in the middle of our walk we came across a dead squirrel. Unlike most dead squirrels this one did not have any tire marks on it or was completely hard like most of them are when you find them dead on the street. It was just lying there back on the ground and looking up to the sky. I assumed it fell from the lamp post but my sister who was next to me said "you're an idiot." A couple of days later I came across another dead squirrel but this one was in front of the driveway of where I live. It was lying on the ground just like the other squirrel we found the other day. I knew something wrong was going on. Squirrels are falling from high places and killing themselves! It's worst than the disappearing bees around the world! I was so puzzled that I decided to take a picture of the poor animal but I was too late. A car parked on top of it. So I made a small drawing of it.

Last week I decided to clear up things around my room because it was getting too crowded. I threw many things away like plush toys, tourist sweaters, small souvenirs, and old notebooks for classes I've taken years ago. I came across a lot of old technology like web cams, microphones, and little sound systems for computers. I had to throw those things away because I already have all of that built-in on my laptop. Technology changes way too quickly y'all. After clearing up most of the garbage I was collecting I started to feel the space reappear again in my room. I decided to post drawings I like on the wall because I don't ever hang my art on my bedroom wall but this was the time. I found this drawing of two women facing the viewer from the back and posing with attitude. I decided to put them both together because I thought they made a good team.

Book review+ I was fat+ Very First Drawing

I've been reading this book called The Accidental Masterpiece by Michael Kimmelman. It's very interesting and easy to read. Kimmelman writes about the beauty of art which is very hard to define but he somehow does it by mentioning various works that are considered art. When I read most of it it kinda seemed that everything could be art if you just gave enough thought. But then as you read more and more and how photographs taken by "normal" people can be passed as art- taken in consideration the randomness of the shot and the idea that an untrained eye taking the photograph- Kimmelman starts to uncover the other factors of art-making that are often not thought about or even noticed as art by most people. His criticism of the art included in the book is also very helpful if one wants to understand what critics think about when viewing art- and apparently they think about EVERYTHING. If you read this book you will definitely have more to contemplate when viewing art other than just technique and retinal qualities.

On other news, I've discovered that my skin is highly elastic. This results from the time I was a little more spacious than the average citizen (220 lbs.) I wore pants that were size 40-42 and ate a crunch bar religiously everyday. I also had tons of pimples and my forehead looked like the back of the crunch bar I was eating. But I lost it all. It happened when I decided to stop eating burgers and drinking soda and started exercising regularly. Now I'm super hot and everybody loves me. Well not really, but it does feel good to lose all the weight.

This is the very first drawing I made from the drawing series I'm working on. The concept of it all is to have drawings which people can associate with by seeing that they were drawn with ball point pens. I want people to feel the human hand but not the artist human hand but a anyone's hand like "I could do that too" type of feeling. I use gesso instead of white out because white out is too messy and gesso sends the same I-did-this-with-office-supplies-and-lots-of-time feeling that I want people to feel. I'm thinking about making a new drawing this week inspired by the flying 7' x 6' slab of concrete that hit me and my sister on the 880 freeway here in CA and once its done I'll post it.

Mama Buzz cafe + San Francisco + World of Warcraft

Last week I went to Oakland to discuss my upcoming show at Mama Buzz cafe in October with Irene Ross, the curator, and James Lovekin, the other artist exhibiting alongside of me. The show will run from October 3rd to the 25th. Me and Lovekin's art is similar in many aspects. We are both inspired subcultures and our art is popping. I'll be exhibiting all my paintings from the Verses shows and he will be exhibiting from his Sideshow series which I think is currently up in Luca's cafe in Oakland. Irene is super nice and we had a friendly smoke when we went over things.

The space is nice but I'm still thinking about redesigning it a little bit. I want it to feel like a show rather than an exhibition and I hope I can create an environment attractive enough to draw some attention. I'm thinking something black and dramatic to go with the white walls. We can't really abuse the walls so I'm thinking of things that'll stick.

On other news we went to San Francisco because I haven't done anything fun in a while. Sometimes it's good to take time to yourself and just kick back and drink a mocha and think about things..

We also saw these cool sunglasses ads and decided that our sunglasses should be part of it.

On a sadder note I quit playing this really infamous online game, World of Warcraft. I played it for about a year and a half but lately it's been just very monotonous so I decided to stop. In-game I joined a guild (you probably think I'm nerdy) and I did help people in it when I had time. I always thought my acts of kindness- running people through dungeons, helping them in arena battles, or just protecting them from the opposing faction- would always be taken for granted because of the nature of the game. But when my last day came and I bid farewell to all my guildmates they actually thanked me, each one individually, for things I've done to help them in the past. I couldn't believe the amount of responses and people whose game experience I changed by just lending them a hand. It was very touching :.) I felt moved and I think it was because when I used to live in Pomona, CA I felt sad that I had to leave all the friendships I created and all the people that changed me or whom I changed. Everything comes to an end someday and only after a while you realize how good it was.

This weekend was very hot. Not only did the heat get to me but also my friend (in a non-sexual way), Allen Yang, from UCD came down to Hayward to visit me. I told him before hand that I wanted to make a song up and record so i could post it on my blog. We both enjoy music and for different reasons we can't always play because of other things (i.e: being an artist, studying for med school, or just taking poor bubbles out for a stroll.) We went to the music dept at CSUEB and found a room and created "This is the End" in which he gets to play a scorching solo and set up sexy intricate chords that not even the BEST of the BEST can expect in a song recorded on my laptop.

The lyrics were written by me and the base melody was created by both me and Allen. The arrangement and piano is Allen. I hope you guys enjoy the end result. Very Jazzy ;)

This is another drawing I've finished. I used shapes to define bigger shapes and only used vertical lines to draw everything. The more you look the more shapes you can find and the whole composition starts making sense when your occult finds those shapes. I felt very accomplished when I saw this up in my studio. I'm diving into deeper and deeper depths with my art and it feels like I'm going to end up somewhere great.

I gave myself a Haircut.

I always cut my hair. Been doing it since 4 years ago when I found out that everything can be done by yourself. Of course it didn't come out wonderful the first few tries but I think I perfected my own style. And I thought about making a video about it because Britney made one and it seemed to attract lots of people. I grab my scissors and twirl my hair and cut it (different sizes create "layering".) Then I style it and trim it to the right size. I also learned that bringing a white attracive plastic bag helps contain any type of mess that haircutting might bring. And NO i never cut myself! K thanks.

In other news, I have been reading this very interesting book called the 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris. I know it's a business book but art is business y'all. Reading makes things feel so much easier and simpler.

What I like most about it is that he can make you think in ways that make prioritizing and working smaller while creating more productivity. It also talks about outsourcing and getting Personal or Virtual Assistants. Who knows someday I'll sell so much art that I'll need assistants to help me with things like filing artwork, buying supplies, or buying me double-no-whip-150 degrees-Mochas when critics or collectors get on my nerves. This book feels more like a philosophy for a simple and productive life. I give it the Salazar stamp of approval!

American Idol + Twitter

So I really wanted to audition for American Idol this year because I love to sing. I used to be in Choir back in HS and took like 6 months of singing lessons which kinda helped me keep singing. 4 years later (2008) I still sing even though I'm not part of any choirs or anything of the kind and I thought maybe auditioning for AI would be a funny way to evaluate what I'm worth in the public media. Anyways here's what I would have auditioned with if I didn't miss the deadlines. You heard me! Me and Jill Therrien (Look under friends) are having a duo show at Rooz Cafe in Oakland (1918 Park Blvd I believe). The show runs from the 4th of February to the 3rd of March and since it was very short notice and all we won't have opening. Instead we'll have a closing on the 29th of feb that's a friday btw. So yah we had the opening on the 27th of January and it was awesome. All people from all lands showed up tall and short and human and animal. It ended way after 9pm like it was supposed to. But anyways here are some pics for y'all that missed it :D

I'll try to bring some to the show too if you want to send someone a message with cool art in the front :P Anyways the show will be coming soon and I think it'll have about 7-8 paintings in it. I still have to manage other things like hanging, and naming, and price listing. I hope it all turns out good in the end x.x I think I invited too many people we will have a crazy opening reception!

Artist Statement

I'm interested in creating a world around the human body according to its emotional state. I like to explore conflicts I've had with people in my life and letting my mind stream images while thinking of my state of being during that time. Many of the things I put down on the canvas are both representational and abstract and represent what the human feeling's world is like the way I imagine it.
When I was young I was always surrounded by street art, graffiti, and random vandalistic acts on streets or in school which I was always indifferent to. The art I saw was very illustrative and evoked a lot of energy. It was only about a year ago that I really started looking back to these. This type of art feels very contemporary and relevant to who I am and it represents a style that helps me convey a rebellious and spontaneous feeling in my paintings. The white spaces with ink drawing, for instance, looks like stencil pasting in the streets of London by Bansky, and my representation of the human body and the weird creatures I create may remind you of the more illustrative side of graffiti.
I try to keep the color palette for each painting very limited. It helps to keep the feeling's world separate and distinct from each other. For example, for "rage" I chose a red-pinkish color palette because the rage I'm trying to convey is delicate and also destructive at the same time. For the bride painting, on the other hand, I chose a peachy-red and black color because I wanted to portray more drama.
When people view my work I expect them to feel slightly uncomfortable and energized at the same time. I want my audience to find and analyze every single detail of the painting and somehow invent an interpretation. There are clues to follow and it is always fun to hear what people have concluded. I have my own interpretation for every painting and most of them are too personal for me to expose so I try to paint in a way in which the viewer can interpret based on their own experiences. My paintings are not meant to be straight forward stories of my life.
I think my work intertwines with my interest in conflicts in my personal life. Things I would not normally be open about but try to express it on canvas for myself. It's an inside look to my duct-taped head.

I am almost finished with this big painting. I think it went pretty well I had lots of fun painting it and it came out better than I thought it would. Not that I thought it would be bad but I kinda impressed myself :) Anyways this one is 48x72 acrylics on paper and also ink like all others.
